June 17, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Scroll down to the bottom of our last six all-in-one desktop reviews and you'll find CNET Labs' latest addition to the desktop testing regimen. With the help of the Environmental Protection Agency's EnergyStar program, some impressive-looking power meters, and not a little trial and error, we're happy to report that we've finally published the first batch of power consumption results.
Our power results come courtesty of Chroma ATE's EnergyStar-certified 66202 Digital Power Meter.
(Credit: Rich Brown/CNET)We have a few goals in mind with our new power tests. We want to help you make more informed buying decisions, for one thing. You'll see an annual energy cost chart in each review that compares the yearly estimated cost to operate a variety of systems. We don't expect the actual dollar amount will influence most of you one way or another (we're only talking about a range from $15 to $30 in this first round), but an annual cost figure also distills the relative efficiency between systems down to straightforward terms. You can also refer to our newly official Juice Box, located above the cost chart, for the individual power ratings across a variety of usage states for each system.
...Apple does exceptionally well on our annual energy cost chart.
(Credit: CNET)Crave: Ghostbusters: Best film-to-game yet, or just a bunch of hype?
June 17, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Delayed for years, a high-profile game originally to be published by Sierra and now in the hands of Atari has finally become reality: a Ghostbusters video game for the Xbox 360 and PS3 that's actually billed as a sequel to the movies.
Written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis and voiced by nearly the entire cast of both films, it's not lacking in official Ghostbusters cred. The question is, how does it play? Reviews have been generally solid, but our intra-office discussions among the CNET editors' gaming roundtable have been just this side of heated. We're presenting our sometimes-conflicting views, and leaving it up to you to sort out who's right. Give us your opinion in the comments section below. Also, be sure to check out our exclusive trailer featuring many of the phantasms you'll encounter in the game! ...
Wired: Review: The iPhone 3GS By Steven Levy
June 17, 2009 at 2:19 pm
We’ve spent some quality time with the iPhone 3GS over the last couple of days and it looks like Apple is going to remain king of the smartphones with its latest iDevice. Although the 3GS is not significantly changed from the older 3G model, there are still a number of updates that make the 3GS noteworthy. From the mind of reviewer Steven Levy:
It’s not as dramatic an advance as the previous ones. But the new phone introduces a long list of improvements, big and small. Taken together, they’re enough to re-establish Apple’s once-shrinking lead in a brutal technology competition that is making the chariot race in Ben Hur look like a walk in the park.
As promised, Apple has indeed ramped up the speed with which the new phone performs tasks like launching apps, loading web pages, and displaying graphics. Apple claims speed boosts of up to two times of what the 3G delivers, and in some benchmarks cites even better performance. I haven’t done scientific measurements, but you don’t need a stopwatch to notice the new phone is zippier than its predecessor. I appreciated getting box scores faster and videos playing sooner in the MLB.com At Bat application, and it was clear that web pages loaded faster. In the case of a game like Tiger Woods Golf, the boost is significant enough to make me more likely to play when I don’t have much time.
In part because Apple is offering many of its innovations as part of the general iPhone 3.0 upgrade — the wise thing for those more recent buyers to do will be to install the new software and stick with their 3G iPhones at least until their contracts run down. This will provide a saner upgrade path to the 3GS’s considerable, but not earth-shattering, improvements. Speed is wonderful. But sometimes it’s prudent to wait for it.
Remember, this isn’t the whole review — just a mere sampling to get your motor running. For the deeper download hit up wired.com/reviews or click here for the full version.
Gearlog: Details Leak About New T-Mobile Android Handset, myTouch 3G
June 17, 2009 at 11:22 am
The race to release new Android handsets has been a slow crawl, indeed. The deluge of new phone utilizing Google's open-source operating system has yet to surface in any way, beyond the multitude of promises from a number of phone and netbook manufacturers. T-Mobile, however, is reportedly working on its own follow up to the first--and still only--Android handset in the States, the G1. According to The Wall Street Journal, more details about the handset--set to be called the myTouch 3G--will surface next week. Like its predecessor, the new phone will be designed by hardware manufacturer, HTC. The myTouch 3G will reportedly look a lot like the HTC Magic--with a touchscreen and no physical keyboard and a smaller body than the iPhone. The phone's software will also feature some update, including a voice-activated search function. More details next week--probably. Crave: Samsung Blue Earth hands-on video
