June 10, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Monster kicked off the Consumer Electronics Association's New York showcase with the introduction of several new products, including a super-thin cable for HDMI, high-speed cables for HDMI, a tabletop universal remote, and new speed tiers for its PowerNet networking solution. The SuperThin cables are the first products to come out of Monster's collaboration with chipmaker RedMere. Monster utilized RedMere's MagniEye technology, which requires no external power supply and sends HD signals directly to the cable. As a result, the cables do not need heavy-gauge copper and are about 65 percent slimmer than normal HDMI cables, measuring 3.5 mm in diameter, Monster said. They are available in 4-, 8-, and 16-foot versions via the company's DigitalLife line of products for $89.95, $99.95, and $119.95, respectively. An 8-foot SuperThin cable for camcorders will cost $99.95. Monster will also offer the SuperThin cables as part of its Core line in 1-meter, 2m, 4m, and 5m lengths, ranging in price from $79.95 to $119.95. Monster has also teamed with THX to produce faster THX certified cables for HDMI.

Wired: Amazing Gallery of Retro, Streamlined Steam-Irons
June 10, 2009 at 2:14 pm
The internet is supposed to be the place for niches. No matter how odd your interests, you'll almost always find something pertinent on the web. Paper books, on the other hand, need to aim at the mass audience and are therefore more mainstream, right?
Then what the hell is Streamlined Irons? The book details the most extraordinarily wonderful steam-iron designs from the 1930s and 1940s, irons with curves so swooping and voluptuous that they make the Chrysler Building look like a prefab garden shed.
Of course, the book comes from somebody eccentric enough to know all about the history of steam irons. The author, Jay Raymond, is a collector, and along with the close-up pop-shots of the irons there is a history of the electric steam iron running as a narrative.
But we don't care about that. It's all about the pictures. And possible the names, too. Try some of these monikers for size: The Never-Lift, the Lady Dover and the Steam-O-Matic A.
The book is available to order now for $70. The publisher? Who else but the Streamline Press?

Crave: PS3's standby and off modes, (virtually) separated at birth
June 10, 2009 at 11:00 am
As useful as information found on the Internet can be, at times, it's also frustratingly myopic, resulting in moments when you have to take matters into your own hands.
Recently, my fiancee pleaded with me to start turning my PlayStation 3 off when it's not in use. Since the red standby light was on, she contended, the unit must be drawing significantly more power than if the unit was simply switched off via the power switch on the back.
Having just tested a couple dozen monitors as part of a CNET power consumption project, I felt I knew a bit about this and explained to her that the difference between standby and off was minuscule at best and that the savings for a whole year would be less than five bucks at the most.
That "1.5434" number represents the wattage average for the PS3 in standby. Pay no attention to the other numbers!
(Credit: Eric Franklin/CNET)She remained adamant, and since I couldn't prove my point outright at that moment--and didn't feel like an argument--I let her win and said I'd start switching it off.
Unfortunately for her, I sometimes see compromising as losing--and I hate to lose.
So the next day I pursued the matter, as standby was too important to me to just give up on. Having your PS3 in standby lets you turn it on from the controller. The laziness in me couldn't let this slide, so I told my fiancee I'd prove that when the PS3 is on standby it draws, at the most, only slightly more power than when it's off.
...Gearlog: Eye-Fi Pro Adds Peer-to-Peer Connectivity, RAW Support
June 10, 2009 at 9:00 am
Eye-Fi today announced a new addition to its lineup of wireless memory cards: the Eye-Fi Pro. Priced at $149.99 for a 4GB card, the Pro is a souped-up version of the Eye-Fi Explore Video; it keeps the Wi-Fi hotspot uploading, geotagging, and JPEG and video support of the Explore but adds RAW image support and "ad hoc" transfers.
The Eye-Fi Pro has the ability to create a peer-to-peer connection between the camera and a computer--no Internet connectivity necessary. Since this ad hoc connection eliminates the need to transfer through Wi-Fi, it's entirely possible that speeds from card to computer will be much faster. We'll, of course, have to wait to test it out to know for sure.
